Our music programme is specifically designed to enable students to pursue a career in music or a related field. The performance and composition skills, coupled with the deep knowledge and understanding that you will gain of the subject, will help you prepare for a variety of careers.

In this module you will explore the operas by Benjamin Britten, one of Britain’s most influential composers. Britten’s operas are among the few 20th-century works that hold a central position in today’s operatic canon. Islands students are entitled to different support to that of students from the rest of the UK. One or two examples of teacher-marked harmony and counterpoint (eg Baroque chorale, 16th-century counterpoint, 2-part invention, string quartet, Romantic songs). We understand that not all students are formally taught this as part of their course.

As an undergraduate, you will also have access to instruments, performance rooms and collections whenever you need. Students will develop a critical awareness of form and structure in by studying various approaches to musical analysis. The course will draw on a range of analytical methods and musical genres, such as functional harmony and classical form, pitch-class set theory, rhetoric in music, and computer-aided analysis. You may wish to continue honing your skills as a musician and specialising in composition, performance and musicology, especially in your final year.

We do not accept Music Technology as meeting our Music subject requirement. We can accept a pass in Grade 5 Music Theory or Grade 8 Music practical where Music is not studied as an accepted Level 3 qualification. This applies to all BTEC Music courses and similar including UAL and Rockschool. We recognise Music practical and theory exams from ABRSM, Trinity, Rockschool and LCM. You can also work with individual staff members on your own projects, whether as an advanced performer, composer, historian, analyst, ethnomusicologist or music scientist.

You can also perform around the city in a range of different venues. For 6th Form students who want to further their interest in the study of Music. Further reading and resources for students preparing to study Music at Cambridge. Colleges will assess aptitude, knowledge base and potential through tasks at the time of interview. Your performance in the assessment will not be considered in isolation, but will be taken into account alongside the other elements of your application. Some Colleges may require applicants for Music to take a written assessment if shortlisted for interview.
